Explorations in Lighting

Over the past 6 months I have been learning the art of external lighting for portrait photography.  I like using natural light, but, I wanted to experiment with ways to give a little extra bounce to my images.   It took some time to build the toolbox to do it (for external lighting, you need to invest in extra flashes and possibly other accessories I’ll talk about later on in the post).  My first setup: two canon 590 EXII flashes and a cheap lp120.  No triggers at that point.  I had to use the IR system of transmitting the signal from camera to flashes.  This worked in most...

Cargills Grain Elevator

Recently I paid a visit to 2 of Buffalo’s grain elevators – Cargills and Concrete Central.  Both sites were quite the adventure.  So much concrete in these monolithic structures, its somewhat daunting, and very hard to not be drawn to the huge hallways of columns.  Take a look see!  And if you like what you see, prints are available.  If your local to Buffalo you can buy direct – just send me an email - or- if your outside the Buffalo area visit my Fine Art America page.   [Show as slideshow] ...

New Work

winter is always a strange time for photography.  Especially this one, things just look more dead than they should with little to no snow on the ground.  Other days look almost right, but end up flawed due to high wind.  But some days are just really nice.  I don’t know what it is in the skjy that give’s buffalo that purple tinge to its sunsets, but it does look quite amazing.   enjoy the images! St. Josephs Cathedral

The fifth stop on my tour of Churches and Cathedrals, St Josephs Cathedral!  Construction began in 1862 and was completed in 1869.  Originally it was supposed to have two towers, but in the end only one was built.  Between 1915 and 1977  it was known as the ‘Old Cathedral,’ as a new cathedral had taken its place on Delaware ave.  The delaware Ave Cathedral met it’s demis in 1977 though, and the Franklin Street location regained it’s cathedral title and status. This shoot was the last Art shoot for me before sending my camera body off to Canon Professional...
